Generation C London Impact Event

Generation C London Impact Event

Today, I joined leaders in business, education, and government at the London Impact Event, hosted by Generation C at The Fleet Green Construction & Digital Skills Hub. The discussions focused on how we can foster green skills and sustainable practices, ultimately contributing to a policy whitepaper to shape the new government’s approach to climate education.

Round table talks with Alpa Patel Laing O'Rourke  Antonio Navarro Schneider Electric  Mukesh Kumar Suresh Kumar, Zara (Shad) I. Lords Builders Merchants, Michelle Hawthorne and Jo from Dartford Science and Technology College and UCL.

Key Takeaways:

  • Retrofit as a Core Solution: We explored the importance of retrofitting both domestic and commercial properties. This area has vast potential for green careers and offers a pathway for individuals from diverse backgrounds to enter the sector.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Building an attractive, inclusive sector is essential to bring in a wider range of perspectives. Beyond core roles, we need talent for project management, business development, and compliance to fully support sustainable initiatives.
  • Stability in the Supply Chain: For the green sector to thrive, government support is crucial. By removing uncertainty, we can instill confidence in businesses and the supply chain, allowing them to invest in long-term, sustainable solutions.
  • Encouraging Growth and Innovation: Personal development and innovation are at the heart of a sustainable workforce. We discussed the role of immersive technologies in education, enabling students to simulate real-world scenarios and build hands-on skills.

Throughout the day, we engaged in roundtable sessions on:

  • Bridging the gap between business and education for future talent development
  • Leveraging AI and immersive learning to redefine education
  • Expanding the Apprenticeship Levy to address the green skills challenge
  • Exploring the broader roles needed to support sustainability efforts
